These ads are sending messages warning children about being obesity in the young age. By using those familiar toys such as Barbie, Superman, these ads could get lots of attention from young viewers. However, there are two side effects in those ads. First, warning about obesity in young age by not being active can put lots of pressure on the people about being thin, or super thin like Barbie. Factors such as: fashion, movie stars, models play a huge role in influencing people about being thin. These things could possibly brain-wash young generation about the ideal body type like Susan Bordo quoted in her article that being fat is considered worse than being handicapped. This is so wrong. Second, theses ads could be considered as offensive to obese people throughout the world. People do not want to become obese. Most of them inherited it from the gene. The rest of them could relate to overeating, stress, or life crisis at some point in life. People criticize others about being thin as skeleton but they also criticize normal healthy person as “fat.” I believe as long as people love and respect each other more, appearance would not matter at all. So, give us a break!

I totally agree with you. It is so sad to think that kids would rather be handicapped than fat. What is our world teaching our children. Ads like these and the media are the reasons why young girls and boys develop eating disorders. Your right about the pressure that comes form the movies. Movie stars are who not only kids but people in general compare themselves to. It is so sad.
ReplyDeletewe do need to give people a break and love and respect people for who they are. i believe ads like these contribute to people developing eating disorders. in the media there is so much pressure on being thin and perfect, that some people either stop eating or start eating too much because maybe they don't see instant result from the exercise they are doing.
ReplyDeleteI agree that our society forces not just children but people to think of skinny being perfect. i also think this bring a very negative view of people who are over weight to the point where kids laugh are stare at people who are over weight. I also like how you brought up that the obesity is inherited and i think people forget that sometimes.
ReplyDeleteyes, stress is a big cause to overeat. If kids and people in general didn't have so much media comming at them about how important it is to be skinny, everyone eould probablly be alot healthier because they wouldn't starve themselves.
